June is the beginning of the summer season. This is the season to think of summer safety for ourselves, family and friends. Summer is the warmest time of the year with the rays of the sun most direct. Webster's Dictionary describes ultraviolet as those rays that are just beyond the violet end of the spectrum. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation consists of invisible rays from the sun. These three bands of UV light are: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC rays are not of concern because they don't reach the earth's surface area. The earth's atmosphere absorbs UVC wave lengths. The UVB rays burn the skin and can damage the eyes. UVB rays in combination with snow and cold can cause snow blindness. Research suggests that daily exposure to UVB over years could cause cataracts. UVA rays, however, cause aging, wrinkling and loss of skin elasticity. UVA rays also increase the damaging effects of UVB, including skin cancer and cataracts. Therefore, sunglasses don't need to be fashionable, they just need to block 99-100% of the UV rays. The first and best line of defense against the sun is to wear a hat, sunglasses, and cotton clothing of a tight weave. Stay out of the sun between the hours of 10AM-4PM and wear skin protection factor (SPF) 15 or greater. Children are more susceptible to sun rays and should follow the above guidelines. Keep babies out of direct sunlight and in the shade with clothing on arms and legs. See health care provider about the use of SPF for babies. We need summer for the growth of seeds for food, but people need to be safe from the damaging rays of the summer sun. "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct your paths"
(Proverbs 3.6).
