Let's focus on the nursing speciality of Faith Community Nursing (FCN) also known as Parish Nursing (PN), Congregational Nursing, and Health Ministry Nursing. The Scope and Standards of this speciality were developed in 2005 by the American Nursing Association (ANA) and the Health Ministries Association (HMA). Faith Community Nursing is defined as the specialized practice of professional nursing that focuses on the intentional care of the spirit as part of the process of promoting holistic health and preventing or minimizing illness in a faith community. (ANA,HMA ,2005)

Education for an FCN/PN can be obtained through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center (IPNRC) St. Louis, MO which has the Copyrighted Curriculum.

Speciality certification, at this writing, is not available, but is being researched.

FCN's/PN's are either paid or unpaid, not all are considered volunteers. The FCN/PN is a registered professional nurse who performs the role according to the nurse practice act of the state.
