Dear Viewers, In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. ""I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? My help is from the Lord, who make heaven and earth" ( Psalm 121:1-2). The month of October is recognized as National Brain Injury Awareness month. The Risk for injury as defined by the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) is: The state in which an individual is at risk for harm because of a perceptual or physiologic deficit, a lack of awareness of hazards, or maturational age. |
|
| Injury is the fourth leading cause of death in the general population and the leading cause of death for children and young adults (NANDA). Who is at most risk for brain injury? However, anyone can get a brain injury and statistics show males are more at risk than females at a risk of two times more. The ages of males 15-24 have the most brain injuries. Most of the causes of brain injury are from motor vehicle accidents which amount to 50%. Falls account for 21%; sports and recreation account for 10% and assaults and violence account for 12% (www.biausa.org). So, is there some prevention of these traumatic events? Some interventions are: health education that focuses on motor vehicle safety, home safety, fire safety, seat belt use, water safety, CPR, and poison safety. Helmets for riding bikes, motor cycles, and atvs must be properly fitted. Dentists recommend that athletes should wear mouth guards to decrease the risk of a concussion by thwarting the blow to the jaw. Pregnant women should continue to wear seat belts at all times (www.biausa.org). Happy St. Luke"s day October 18th. "The Lord will guard your coming and your going, both now and forever" (Psalm 121:7). | |
