June is recognized for Home Safety Month, Sun Safety Week (3-9), and Vision Research Month. This is a good time to focus on the prevention of falls in older adults. CDC.gov states that one third of adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States; and falls are the leading cause of injury deaths. Also, they are the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. Many of these falls lead to head injuries and hip fractures.
.
So, how can older adults prevent falls? There are several steps that they can take to protect themselves such as, exercise regularly every day to maintain muscle strength and balance by walking, dancing, and water aerobics to mention a few. Ask your Health Care Provider or Parish Nurse to review your medications and your eating habits. See your eye doctor yearly. Wear non-slip soled shoes. Use handrails on the stairs. Use non-skid rugs. Have grab bars installed in bathrooms.

"In Him who is the source of my strength I have strength for everything." (Philippians 4:13)

HAPPY AND SAFE SUMMER
