Autism (www.autismspeaks.org) is a complex neurological disorder that lasts throughout a person's lifetime. It is part of a group of disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Today, 1 in 150 individuals are diagnosed as autistic with 1 in 94 boys effected. Rett's syndrome affects girls. It was first identified in 1943 by Dr. Leo Kanner of John Hopkin's. At the same time, a German scientist Dr Hans Asperger described a milder form now known as Asperger's disorder.
.
Parents are often the first to notice that something is not right with their child. They might notice: no big smiles, no babbling by 12 months, no back and forth sharing of sounds or facial expressions, no words by 16 months, no back and forth gesturing, no two word phrases by 24 months, and any loss of speech or social skills at any age.
.
These signs and symptoms should be discussed with their Health Care Provider immediately or during well child check-ups, observational data, and developmental milestones screening for further evaluation. This diagnosis is very devastating for the parent, child and family. Referrals should be made at this time. Much support and prayers are needed. Please visit your Parish Nurse

Romans 12:12 states, "Rejoice in hope, be patient under trial, persevere in prayer."
