April, 2004
Dear Viewers,

Peace and Happy Easter to all in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He is Risen and death is overcome. April is the month noted for Cancer Control, Alcohol Awareness and 2004 WalkAmerica. Spring is in full swing with fresh air and the smell of flowers and trees blooming, birds singing and new life emerging. We sense God's Presence in life. "God passes by, but I cannot see him." (Job 9:11).

Our inner self senses God's presence all around us. "We do not fix our gaze on what is seen but on what is unseen." (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). The function of Integrator of Faith and Health for the Parish Nurse can focus on the nurse's presence. This presence is defined as use of self and allowing a person to be conscious of God, and being there for the parishioners of the church. Being there can mean having regular office hours at the church which gives the parishioners comfort. They have commented, "When I ride by I know you are in your office." Presence also means being there in their need. This is the intervention of a parish nurse in use of self (Peplau,1952). To enhance this presence, active listening is used by the parish nurse frequently. The presence of the parish nurse opens the nurse parishioner relationship. To name a few of the interventions used for presence are: being available, praying with the person, writing newsletters on faith and health, displaying ideas about faith and health on the church bulletin board, sending flowers/roses or taking them to the parishioner, and referring to clergy for further spiritual needs. "Let me see your face, when I awake, let me be filled with your presence" (Psalm 17:15)
